There are weddings that work because everything went according to plan. And then there are those that work because the right people find themselves in the right place, and everything around them feels genuinely real. Patricia and Elis's wedding belongs to the second category. A destination wedding in Umbria, planned from afar, lived with an energy that was visible in every corner of the day. A story that captures what it truly means to choose Italy, and Umbria in particular, for the most important day of your life.
From the Other Side of the World to Umbria
Why Umbria for an International Destination Wedding
Choosing Umbria for a wedding from abroad is not the first thing that comes to mind. Tuscany is more famous, the Italian coastlines more obvious. Yet anyone who arrives in Umbria quickly understands why this region works so well for destination weddings: it is authentic without being rustic, beautiful without being polished, welcoming in a way that feels natural rather than staged. For international couples who want a real Italy, not the postcard version, Umbria is often the right answer.

Villa Baroncino on Lake Trasimeno: the Perfect Base
Patricia and Elis chose Villa Baroncino, an eighteenth-century farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. A venue overlooking the largest lake in central Italy, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, just a few minutes from Passignano sul Trasimeno and less than half an hour from Perugia. The villa accommodates up to 120 guests and offers overnight stays, turning the wedding into a multi-day experience. Many of Patricia and Elis's guests chose to stay on, exploring the surrounding area in the days around the celebration.

The Ceremony in Cortona: Where Tuscany Enters the Story
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
For the ceremony, the couple chose the Duomo of Cortona, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which looks out over the main square of one of Tuscany's most beautiful medieval towns. The church has ancient origins, documented as early as the eleventh century as a Romanesque parish church, and in its current form was designed in the second half of the fifteenth century by followers of Giuliano da Sangallo. The interior holds a rich collection of historical and artistic treasures. To marry here is to say your vows in a place that has already heard thousands of promises, in one of the most beautiful towns between Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno.

Cortona: Photographs Among the Lanes of History
After the ceremony, the photographs unfolded through the historic, picturesque streets of Cortona: a town that offers corners of rare beauty, with ancient stone, views over the Val di Chiana and an atmosphere suspended in time that comes through clearly in photographs. The short distance between Cortona and Villa Baroncino, around thirty kilometres, made it easy to move smoothly from ceremony to reception without sacrificing any of the key photographic moments.
The Reception: Warmth, Laughter and a Celebration That Honoured Its Guests
A Warm Atmosphere Despite the Distance
One of the most beautiful aspects of this wedding was the warmth of the guests. Despite being a destination wedding, with many people having travelled from far away, the atmosphere at Villa Baroncino during the reception was lively and intimate at the same time. When people who love each other find themselves somewhere beautiful, far from their daily routines, something special happens: conversations flow more easily, laughter comes more freely, dancing needs no encouragement. Villa Baroncino, with its outdoor spaces and the view of the lake shifting with the evening light, played its part perfectly.
The Day Through the Photographer's Eyes
Alessandro Pellicciari followed Patricia and Elis from beginning to end, from the getting-ready moments at the villa to the final dances of the evening. An international wedding brings specific challenges: guests from different cultures, a rhythm to the day that does not always match Italian traditions, emotions expressed in different languages. Reportage photography in this context becomes an even more valuable tool: it captures what needs no translation, those glances and gestures that mean the same thing anywhere in the world.

What We Can Learn from Patricia and Elis's Story
Flexibility as a Strength
A destination wedding in Umbria calls for flexibility on both sides: from the couple, who must organise everything from a distance, and from the suppliers, who need to welcome different cultures and expectations with ease. The story of Patricia and Elis shows that when this flexibility is there, the results are extraordinary. The day followed the structure of a traditional Italian wedding, but its spirit was universal.
The Umbria-Tuscany Border as an Advantage
The location of Villa Baroncino, right on the border between Umbria and Tuscany, is an advantage not to be underestimated. Within an hour you can reach Perugia, Assisi, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona and Montepulciano. For guests who stay on for a few days, every direction offers a different story to bring home. Many of Patricia and Elis's guests took advantage of the days around the wedding to explore this corner of Italy, returning home with memories that went far beyond the celebration itself.

Is a local photographer really necessary for an international destination wedding?
Knowledge of the territory makes an enormous difference. A photographer who knows the venues, the light, the local customs and the best spots for photographs produces results that a photographer visiting for the first time would find very hard to replicate, however talented they may be.
Is a religious ceremony in Italy legally valid for foreign couples?
Yes, but it requires specific documentation that varies depending on nationality and religious denomination. The advice is to contact the relevant diocese well in advance and, for the civil side, the Italian consulate in the country where the couple resides.
Does Villa Baroncino regularly host international weddings?
Yes, Villa Baroncino has extensive experience with international destination weddings, with staff accustomed to welcoming guests of different nationalities and well-established relationships with local suppliers.
